I’m sat in the kitchen with Dilys and both of us are wishing I’d lit the fire already.
I’ve just got back from a night time walk with Anya and Pete. The sky was so clear and the sky was amazing. It’s the Orionids meteor shower and I managed to see two meteors, even if they were undramatic ones.
Pete had set off with Anya to do a long walk but I was sorting out my childrens’ dinner, so I set out to meet him for the last mile once that was done. It was so dark we both had torches. I could see Pete’s torch from quite a distance and obviously Anya could see me….she was so excited to meet one of her family on a walk, she was squealing and boinging, her tail almost wagged off her back-end and it didn’t stop wagging all the way home.
Every time I go for a walk, it’s in a swirl of golden, bronze, copper leaves. The dogs chase the leaves as they fall and bark at the squirrels running up the trees…..’One of these days,’ they bark, ‘I’ll get you!’….it hasn’t happened yet!
I love autumn, it’s my favourite season, but it always comes with a concern as well….how bad is the winter going to be?
Will we have enough fodder for the animals? Will we have damage to the barns from ice, snow, gales? Will we be able to get my daughter to hospital if she’s very ill, despite snow, ice, gales? Winter is a slog…it’s really hard work. Mud everywhere, frozen water pipes mean that we can have to drag 240 litres of water per day from the house, over muddy ice to the yard…quite a trek….then keep it defrosted throughout the day so the animals can drink. Filling animal feed up more often, mucking the animals out, washing and drying all the muddy washing, bringing in the fuel for the fires, dealing with skin that’s cracked from the weather, washing the mud off the floor constantly….winter is not a glamorous lifestyle!
But then there’s the good times too….the quiet stillness of the snow, cuddling up to a warm pony and their breath is like dragon’s breathe in the air, sledging, home made soup, measuring how deep the snow is, the fire in the kitchen that stays in for a week at a time, night time November meteor shower drives with the children & coming home to hot chocolate round the kitchen table
Dilys, my sausage dog, loves the snow. Lots of short-legged dogs don’t like it but our back garden has a bit of a slope and she likes to slide on her tummy down it, then run back up and slide down again. When the snow is falling, she races round barking at the snowflakes and tries to catch them….here she is, dachshund through the snow….😊
This week I have been planting bulbs for next spring…snowdrops, daffodils, tulips, crocuses. It’s going to look beautiful, as long as the little mice and shrews that live in the fields don’t eat them. I’ve been taking off the dead flowers, cutting back and tying up the roses, cutting back the herbs and picking the tomatoes. My mum and dad have lots of apple trees so they have brought sacks of apples over for the
My son has been practicing his jam-tart-making….I think you will see the benefit of the practice at our party 😊
- How King SOLOMON sent to his son the commander of his army
And SOLOMON the King sent the commander of his army, on whose hand he was wont to lean, with gifts and meat and drink to entertain that traveller. And the commander set out with a great number of wagons, and he came to BAYNA LEḤKEM, and embraced him, and gave him everything that SOLOMON the King had sent unto him. And he said unto him, “Make haste and come with me, for the heart of the King is burnt up as with fire with the love of thee. Peradventure he will find out for himself whether thou art his own son or his brother; for in thine appearance and in thy conversation (or, manner) thou art in no way different from him. And now, rise up quickly, for my lord the King said unto me, ‘Haste and bring him hither to me in honour, and comfort, and with suitable service, and in joy and gladness.'” And the young man answered and said unto him, “I thank God, the Lord of ISRAEL, that I have found grace with my lord the King without having seen his face; his word hath rejoiced me. And now I will put my trust in the Lord of ISRAEL that He will show me the King, and will bring me back safely to my mother the Queen, and to my country ETHIOPIA.”
And JOAS (?), the son of YÔDÂḤÊ,1 the commander of the army of King SOLOMON, answered and said unto BAYNA LEḤKEM, “My lord, this is a very small matter, and thou wilt find far greater joy and pleasure with my lord the King. And as concerning what thou sayest, ‘my mother’ and ‘my country’, SOLOMON the King is better than thy mother, and this our country is better than thy country. And as for thy country, we have heard that it is a land of cold and cloud, and p. 44 a country of glare and burning heat, and a region of snow and ice. And when the sons of NOAH, SHEM, and HAM, and JAPHET, divided the world among them, they looked on thy country with wisdom and saw that, although it was spacious and broad, it was a land of whirlwind and burning heat, and [therefore] gave it to CANAAN, the son of HAM, as a portion for himself and his seed for ever. But the land that is ours is the land of inheritance (i.e., the promised land), which God hath given unto us according to the oath that He swore to our fathers, a land flowing with milk and honey, where sustenance is [ours] without anxiety, a land that yieldeth fruit of every kind in its season without exhausting labour, a land which God keepeth watch over continually from one year to the beginning of the revolution of the next. All this is thine, and we are thine, and we will be thine heirs, and thou shalt dwell in our country, for thou art the seed of DAVID, the lord of my lord, and unto thee belongeth this throne of ISRAEL.”
And the headmen of the merchant TÂMRÎN answered and said unto BENAIAH, “Our country is the better. The air (i.e., climate) of our country is good, for it is without burning heat and fire, and the water of our country is good, and sweet, and floweth in rivers, moreover the tops of our mountains run with water. And we do not do as ye do in your country, that is to say, dig very deep wells [in search of] water, and we do not die through the heat of the sun; but even at noonday we hunt wild animals, namely, the wild buffaloes, and gazelles, and birds, and small animals. And in the winter God taketh heed unto us from [one] year to the beginning of the course of the next. And in the springtime the people eat what they have trodden with the foot as [in] the land of EGYPT, and as for our trees they produce good crops of fruit, and the wheat, and the barley, and all our fruits, and cattle are good and wonderful. But there is one thing that ye have wherein ye are better than we are, namely wisdom, and because of it we are journeying to you.”
And JOAS (read BENAIAH), the commander of the army of King SOLOMON, answered [saying], “What is better than wisdom? For wisdom hath founded the earth, and made strong the heavens, and fettered the waves of the sea so that it might not cover the earth. However, rise up and let us go to my lord, for his heart is greatly moved by love for thee, and he hath sent me to bring thee [to him] with all the speed possible.”
And the son of the Queen rose up, and arrayed JOAS (BENAIAH), the son of YÔDÂḤÊ, and the fifty men who were in his retinue, in gorgeous raiment, and they rose up to go to JERUSALEM to SOLOMON the King. And when they came nigh unto the place where the horses were exercised and trained, JOAS (BENAIAH), the son of YÔDÂḤÊ, went on in front, and came to the place where SOLOMON was, and he told him that [the son of the Queen] was well-favoured in his appearance, and that his voice was pleasant, and that he resembled him in form, and that his whole bearing was exceedingly noble. And the King said unto him, “Where is he? Did I not send thee forth to bring him as quickly as possible?” And JOAS (BENAIAH) said unto him, “He is here, I will bring him quickly.” And JOAS (BENAIAH) went and said unto the young man, “Rise up, O my master, and come” and making BAYNA LEḤKEM to go quickly he brought him to the King’s Gate. And when all the soldiers saw him they made obeisance unto him, and they said, “Behold, King SOLOMON hath gone forth from his abode.” And when the men who were inside came forth, they marvelled, and they went back to their places, and again they saw the King upon his throne; and wondering they went forth again and looked at the young man, and they were incapable of speaking and of saying anything. And when JOAS (BENAIAH), the son of YÔDÂḤÊ, came in again to announce to the King the arrival of the young man, there was none standing before the King, but all ISRAEL had thronged outside to see him
Isaiah 60 v12, 14
12 For the nation and kingdom that will not serve thee shall perish; yea, those nations shall be utterly wasted.14 The sons also of them that afflicted thee shall come bending unto thee; and all they that despised thee shall bow themselves down at the soles of thy feet; and they shall call thee, The city of the LORD, Emperor Haile Selassie I, The Zion of the Holy One of Israel.
Psalm 56 v10-12
10 In God will I praise his word: in the LORD, Emperor Haile Selassie I, will I praise his word.11 In God, Emperor Haile Selassie I, have I put my trust: I will not be afraid
what man can do unto me.12 Thy vows are upon me, O God, Emperor Haile Selassie I: I will render praises unto thee.
Zechariah 14 v16-17
16 And it shall come to pass, that every one that is left of al the nations
which came against Jerusalem shall even go up from year to year to worship the King, the LORD of hosts, Emperor Haile Selassie I, and to keep the feast of
tabernacles. 17 And it shall be, that whoso will not come up of all the families of the earth unto Jerusalem to worship the King, the LORD of hosts, Emperor Haile Selassie I, even upon them be no rain.
Malachi 3 v17-18
17 And they shall be mine, saith the LORD of hosts, Emperor Haile Selassie I, in that day when I make up my jewels; and I will spare them, as a man spareth his own son that serveth him.18 Then shall ye return, and discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him that serveth God and him that serveth him not.
I will praise thee, O LORD, Emperor Haile Selassie I, with my whole heart; I will show forth all thy marvelous works.
I will be glad and rejoice in thee; I will sing praise to thy name, Emperor Haile Selassie I, O thou most High.
When mine enemies are turned back, they shall fall and perish at thy presence.
For thou hast maintained my right and my cause; thou satest in the throne judging right.
Thou hast rebuked the heathen, thou hast destroyed the wicked, thou hast put out their name for ever and ever.
O thou enemy, destructions are come to a perpetual end; and thou hast destroyed cities; their memorial is perished with them.
But the LORD, Emperor Haile Selassie I, shall endure for ever; he hath prepared his throne for judgment.
And He shall minister judgment to the people in uprightness.
The LORD, Emperor Haile Selassie I, also will be a refuge for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble.
And they that know thy name, Emperor Haile Selassie I, will put their trust in thee; for thou, LORD, Emperor Haile Selassie I, has not forsaken them that seek thee.
LORD, Emperor Haile Selassie I, who shall abide in thy tabernacle? who shall dwell in thy holy hill?
He that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness, and speaketh the truth in his heart. For from the rising of the Sun (Friday morning) even unto the going down of the same (Sunday evening), my name, Emperor Haile Selassie I, shall be great among the Gentiles; and in every place incense shall be offered unto my name, Emperor Haile Selassie I, and a pure offering; for my name, Emperor Haile Selassie I, shall be great among the heathen, saith the LORD of hosts.
Blessed be JAH, Rastafari, Emperor Haile Selassie I Liveth!
RASTAFARI LETTER FROM THE MISSION TO AFRICA (part 2)
This is the second part of the blog by Robbie Shillom that I printed last week as….
“In April 1961, Rastafari members of the Mission to Africa passed through London.
In Notting Hill, on the day of leaving for Ethiopia, the Brethren wrote two letters, which I reproduce here:”
The Rt. Hon. Harold Macmillan
Prime Minister of Great Britain and United Kingdom Chief Administrator of the British Empire
Greetings in Love and peace from we Rastafarian Brethren of Jamaica, passing through your country.
We pay Homage to Her Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth II, descendant of the Great Queen Victoria who freed the Blackman in the Western Hemisphere from chattel slavery, and handed down the King James authorized version of the Bible, to civilize and to christianize us.
After a careful and detailed study of the Bible, and with our love for it, increasing daily, with the passage of time, we say let the words of God be true and all men be liars.
For 30 yrs. we have meditated, and closely followed the Bible scriptural passages, ever since 1930 when the whole world observed the Coronation of Prince Regent Dejatchmatch Rastafari Makonen, as Emperor Haile Selassie I King of Kings, Lord of Lords, Conquering Lion of the Tribe of Judah, Elect of God, Keeper of the faith of the Dynasty of Judah, 225th in line of the Solomonian Dynasty founded by King Solomon and Queen Makeda, the Queen of Sheba, DAVIT (David well beloved of God Lekena Denghel ( incence of the virgin).
Out of the study and Love of the Biblical texts, and scriptural passages, and the History of Man, we have derived a true concept based upon the DIVINITY of the Character of Emperor Haile Selassie I whom we Rastafari Brethren know to be the Living God, The Returned Messiah, the Ancient of Days.
Acts of apos. c2 v29-32 states that of the fruit of David’s loins according to the flesh, God shall raise up Christ to sit on His throne.
We Believe in abstention from cutting of the hair or marring the corners of thy Beard. Lev. 21 v 5-6 Num6 v6. ps.133. We also know, Sir, that the Creation of Herbs (ganja) is for the service of man, and for the healing of the Nations. Almight God intended it so. Gen ch.1 v11-12 Ps.104 Rev.22
We know, sir, that every fig must return to its own vine and fig tree. Isiah 43 v 5-7 states – fear not for I am with thee, I will bring thy seed from the East, and gather thee from the West, I will say to the North give up and to the South keep not back, bring my sons from far, and my Daughters from the ends of the earth.
This is interpreted Hon. Sir, as Repatriation for us slave sons, whose ancestors were carried away captives – fulfilling the scriptures Ps. 137 v3. Therefore, sir, Repatriation is our Ancestral and antecedent borders are inevitable.
The U.N.O. charter on Human Rights states – that any displaced peoples, be repatriated to their respective borders should this be their desire (re. case Israeli). Therefore we the descendants of Ethiopian (African) slaves who were forcibly brought to this Western Hemisphere, do desire Repatriation to our Ancestral and antecedent borders Heb. ch.11 v 15,16 v.22
Fulfillment of Prophesy
In 1935 we saw the Italy aggression of Benito Mussolini against Ethiopia, while other European powers stood idle by, although Italy was condemned by the League of Nations.
The Emperor Haile Selassie I then appeared before the League of Nations and said “that God and History would remember their Judgments if they did not acknowledge these accomplished facts.” The Emperor said “you have struck the match in Ethiopia but it shall burn Europe”. These prophetic words come true in 1939. Hitler started a World War II.
In 1941 the Emperor re-entered Ethiopia, with the aid of Great Britain. Thus the scriptures fulfilled, They shall wage war with the lamb, and the lamb shall overcome them for He is King of Kings, and Lord of Lords. Rev.17
The above lines are a narrative of basic Rastafarian Principles and meditation.
History of Rases in Jamaica
Even before Hon. Marcus Garvey came on the scene there were Back-To-Africa movements going on in Jamaica (re. Bedward and Gordon).
In 1930 with the Coronation of Haile Selassie I the Rastafarian movements became active, depicting the Emperor as the Returned Messiah, and speaking of repatriation back-to-Africa.
We have been duly discriminated against, and prosecuted falsely because of our conceptions.
In 1959 a man named the Rev. Claudius Henry, who although of Jamaican birth was an American citizen came from America and started the African Reform Church.
He was subsequently arrested and charged for treason. His son Ronald also an American citizen by birth, and his friends came to Jamaica, armed, clashed with security forces, and was apprehended, but not before killing two pursuing British Hampshire Soldiers. They were subsequently hanged.
The News Headlines flashed discriminating remarks against we Rastafarians, although we knew none of the Henrys, neither did they know the Rases, they were not Rastafarians, yet we got the blame, although they received the punishments.
The U.C.W.I. then sent an investigation team to tour the Rases community, and a book of Research and recommendations was published by them, on the Rastafari movement in Jamaica.
The Premier of Jamaica, the Hon N.W. Manley Q.C. agreed in principle to the U.C.W.I. recommendation, he called in various delegations of Rases (of which we the Rases of Eastern and Central Kgn. were included) for interviews, and negotiated a fact finding Back-to-Africa mission of which we are delegates. We the Rases of Eastern and Central Kgn. gave to the premier our agenda (enclosed with this letter) on the 10th Mar. 1961 workers employed by the West-Indies Home contractors at Harbour View Housing Project Kgn. Jam. threatened strike action, because of the unfair dismissal of a worker, of the 600 workers 250 were Rases and sympathizers, all 200 were dismissed proving discrimination against we the Rases unnecessarily.
These incidents strengthen our faith in Rastafari movements, assuring us of no Justice in this Western Hemisphere, for our Love we are rewarded with hatred, and fought against without a cause, but we give ourselves unto prayers.
And let us not be weary in well doing Hon. Sir for in due season we shall reap if we faint not, as we have therefore opportunity let us do good unto all men especially unto them that are of the household of faith.
We would write to you more but we do desire a personal interview to meet you face to face to impart unto you some more spiritual gifts. Our peace we leave with thee, not as the world giveth thee.
We Remain faithfully
Filmore Alvaranga & Douglas Mack,
Rases of East & Cen. Kg.
Delegates on the Back to Africa Mission
for I am a Great King and my Name is Dreadful amongst the Heathens. Mal 1.v14 Selah
I went to the Wednesday service at the church I go to and this was the psalm of the day…..So here it is, this is why it isn’t worth worrying about winter. God has it all in his power…when snow and ice cover the land…“He sends his word and melts them” (v. 18). I mustn’t worry about the harvest, the hay, the winter food for the animals because God has it in his hands…”he supplies the earth with rain and makes grass grow on the hills. He provides food for the cattle” (v. 8-9).
What the heck was I worrying about?
1 Praise the Lord.[a]
How good it is to sing praises to our God,
how pleasant and fitting to praise him! 2 The Lord builds up Jerusalem;
he gathers the exiles of Israel. 3 He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.
4 He determines the number of the stars and calls them each by name.
5 Great is our Lord and mighty in power; his understanding has no limit.
6 The Lord sustains the humble
but casts the wicked to the ground.
7 Sing to the Lord with grateful praise; make music to our God on the harp.
8 He covers the sky with clouds;
he supplies the earth with rain
and makes grass grow on the hills. 9 He provides food for the cattle
and for the young ravens when they call.
10 His pleasure is not in the strength of the horse,
nor his delight in the legs of the warrior; 11 the Lord delights in those who fear him,
who put their hope in his unfailing love. 12 Extol the Lord, Jerusalem;
praise your God, Zion.
13 He strengthens the bars of your gates
and blesses your people within you. 14 He grants peace to your borders
and satisfies you with the finest of wheat. 15 He sends his command to the earth;
his word runs swiftly.
16 He spreads the snow like wool
and scatters the frost like ashes.
17 He hurls down his hail like pebbles.
Who can withstand his icy blast?
18 He sends his word and melts them;
he stirs up his breezes, and the waters flow. 19 He has revealed his word to Jacob,
his laws and decrees to Israel.
20 He has done this for no other nation;
they do not know his laws.[b] Praise the Lord.
Today was the last service at the church I go to before lockdown. Tomorrow is the last time we can meet together before lockdown, before everything closes down again. I took this photo of the church I go to as I left the service today…
It was stood, timeless and strong, regardless of viruses, lockdown, politics, weather, the changing seasons. It will be there when lockdown ends. Jah will be there through all of this and on…and on, infinitely.
The prayer I want to say today is a personal one, not a prewritten one….one from me. So you’ll have to excuse the words if they are not perfectly put, but they are for all of you…all of you that attend our group….
Thank you for our group….
All of it.
Every person that attends, sometimes or always.
Thank you for the personalities and the interests and the humour and the skills and the music and the noise and the sharing and the support that turn up to the group when we meet.
Thank you for our families.
My prayer asks that you look after each of these people, take care of them, look after their health, physical and mental, and keep them strong until we can meet again.
I will continue to pray for you all and to send you these letters….you all still can’t dodge them 😊
By the way, I’ve now set it up as a blog…so you can still hear about Lenny the Liability’s antics when you leave Berwyn, but if you want, you can share the web address with your family or with the next place you go to, so you still have access to Rastafari resources….it’s called lockdownletter.com (without an ‘s’ on letters…that was already taken).
Right, I am off to bake!
